Our Story
1982: A journey from humble beginnings
Over the last 40 years Castle MacLellan has grown from a small operation producing several tubs of pâté a day in the back of a small delicatessen, to a major national force supplying supermarkets the length and breadth of the country. Our reputation and ability to source the best ingredients has enabled us to create the finest recipes and award-winning products – all this from the humblest beginnings.
1987: Time to expand but staying true to our roots
Our foray into the retail sector began when a supermarket buyer tasted the products whilst on holiday in Kirkcudbright. In 1987 we received the keys to a new factory in order for us to meet the demand for our products and to enable the business to grow.
Castle MacLellan’s local history and supplier relationships play as important a role in the company’s success story now, as they did over 40 years ago. Our executive chef, has trawled Scotland, renowned for its abundance of natural produce for ingredients. This has resulted in partnerships with local suppliers including Galloway Lodge Preserves, Orkney Crab, John Mellis Honey and Graham’s Dairies.
1997: The company behind Castle MacLellan
By 1997 the long term investment plan to increase capacity accelerated when Kavli Ltd acquired the business in 1997. Castle MacLellan became a member of the Kavli Group.
Making a Difference
Castle MacLellan is owned by the Kavli Trust which supports good causes both in the UK and abroad.
About the Kavli Trust
The Kavli Trust was set up by the Kavli family in 1962. Today, it’s legacy is to carry forward the philanthropic work of Kavli’s founders.
The Kavli Trust support a broad spectrum of projects but prioritise some thematic areas. They prioritise mental health for children and youth, work for inclusion and prevention of loneliness, health research, and projects that give more people the opportunity to take part in and experience cultural events. In developing countries, we prioritise projects within education for children and youth, health, and different forms of entrepreneurship.
Our goal is to contribute to making a difference in the lives of individuals, in their local communities and to society as a whole.
How it works
The Kavli Trust owns the Kavli Group, which provides the funds for its charitable work. Part of the profits from the Kavli group is reinvested in strengthening and developing the group’s operations, while the remainder is donated to good causes in research, culture and humanitarian work.
Between 2014-2020 the Kavli Trust has shared over £50million to good causes.
In 2021 it was announced that a further £7.8million has been allocated to support even more good causes both locally and across the world.
Humanitarian
Support poor and disadvantaged people in the global south and in the Kavli countries.
Research
Support research in important social areas which can benefit humanity. Prevent and combat serious illnesses and damage caused by modern lifestyle.
